What’s This Practice Book Really About?

Before opening this practice book, I assumed it would simply contain a few sample questions for the Goethe-Zertifikat A1 exam. It does include a complete model test, but I quickly realised it offers much more than random exercises. The material is structured to mirror the actual exam format, giving learners a clear idea of what they can expect on test day.

The book is divided into the same sections used in the official A1 examination. It covers reading, listening, writing, and speaking tasks, allowing learners to experience each part in a realistic sequence. Rather than teaching German from the beginning, its purpose is to help readers apply what they have already learned and become familiar with the exam itself.

The reading section includes short texts, notices, advertisements, simple messages, and everyday information followed by multiple-choice or matching questions. These exercises focus on understanding practical German rather than literary passages, which makes sense considering the level of the examination. I liked that the expectations remain realistic for an A1 learner. The exercises concentrate on communicating clearly rather than writing perfectly.

A Couple of Weak Spots

To be fair, complete beginners may struggle if they pick up this book without any previous study. It assumes that readers already have a basic understanding of German and are preparing specifically for the A1 examination.

I also would have liked a few more explanations after each section. While practising under exam conditions is valuable, brief notes about common mistakes or useful strategies could have made the learning experience even stronger.

Maybe it’s just me, but one complete model test also felt a little limited. After finishing it, I wanted another practice exam to measure my improvement.

Who Will Probably Enjoy This?

If you’re preparing for the Goethe-Zertifikat A1 exam, I think this practice book fits its purpose well. It’s especially useful during the final stage of revision when you’ve already learned the basics and want to see how everything comes together in an exam setting.

I probably wouldn’t recommend starting your German journey with this alone because it isn’t a traditional course book. However, alongside grammar lessons, vocabulary study, and listening practice, it becomes a valuable tool for checking your readiness.

Final Thoughts

Looking back, this wasn’t the kind of book I read for enjoyment, but it certainly made me feel more confident about what to expect from the Goethe A1 examination. It gives learners a realistic preview of the test without making the process feel overly complicated.

If I’m being realistic, I’d still combine it with other learning resources before sitting the exam. Even so, as a focused practice companion, it succeeds in helping learners understand the exam format, identify weak areas, and approach test day with a little more confidence than they had before opening the first page.
