I noticed that some recordings would probably need to be played more than once while studying independently, but that’s part of improving listening skills. Although it isn’t a complete German course, it succeeds in presenting a realistic picture of the B1 examination from beginning to end.

Things That Stood Out to Me

Honestly, I enjoy study materials that stay focused instead of trying to do everything at once, and this book definitely falls into that category. It never pretends to replace a grammar textbook or vocabulary guide. Its strength lies in showing learners what they can actually expect on exam day.

I also liked how authentic many of the tasks felt. The situations didn’t seem artificial or overly academic. Whether it was reading notices or preparing for conversations, most activities reflected situations that German learners might genuinely experience in everyday life.

What surprised me most was how much confidence I gained simply by becoming familiar with the exam structure. Sometimes uncertainty is more stressful than the language itself, and working through complete practice papers helped remove some of that uncertainty.

A Few Things I Liked

The organisation deserves credit. Everything follows a logical sequence, so I never felt lost while moving from one section to another. I found myself checking my own strengths and weaknesses naturally as I progressed through each part of the sample exam.

Another positive point is that the level of difficulty feels appropriate for B1 learners. It challenges you without becoming discouraging. Some questions definitely made me stop and think, but they never felt unfair.

I also appreciated that the material encourages balanced preparation. Instead of spending all your time memorising grammar rules, you’re reminded that communication skills matter just as much.

A Couple of Weak Spots

To be fair, the book assumes you’ve already completed most of your language learning. If someone below B1 level picks it up hoping to learn German, they’ll probably feel overwhelmed quite quickly.

I also wished there were more explanations after certain tasks. Sometimes I wanted a brief note explaining why one answer was stronger than another. The practice itself is excellent, but learners studying alone may occasionally need additional resources or teacher feedback.

At one point I felt that completing several similar practice sections back to back became slightly repetitive. That’s understandable for exam preparation, but it’s something I noticed during longer study sessions.

Final Thoughts

Looking back, I think this book works best as the final stage of exam preparation rather than the beginning of a learning journey. It helped me understand the rhythm of the Goethe B1 examination far better than simply reading about the exam online.

If I’m being realistic, it won’t magically improve your German overnight. You still need vocabulary, grammar practice, listening exposure, and regular speaking practice outside the book. However, as a structured collection of realistic sample exams, it does its job well.

By the time I finished working through it, I felt more organised and much less anxious about what the actual examination would involve. For learners approaching the Goethe B1 exam with a solid language foundation already in place, I think this is a practical and worthwhile resource that prepares you for the experience rather than simply testing what you already know.
